Hanging Back (Pitching)

What it is:

When the pitcher shifts their weight backwards or away from the plate during the leg lift.

Why it matters:

Leaves too much weight on the back leg. Leads to reduced velocity, shortened stride, and timing issues. The ball may sail high or lack finish.

Good mechanics in this phase look like:

  • Strong push off the rubber, weight moving into the front leg at foot plant.

  • Staying stacked over the back hip without drifting backward.

How to address it:

  • Drills: Drive-down-the-mound drills, stride length training.

  • Cues: “Get down the mound,” “Carry your momentum forward.”
