Closing the Front or Back (Pitching)

What it is:

When the pitcher's torso tilts toward or away from the batter during the Drive phase

Why it matters:

This tilt disrupts balance, timing, and direction. Leaning inward (“closing”) can restrict hip rotation and make it hard to clear the arm. Leaning outward (“opening”) often causes loss of power and inconsistent release points.

Good mechanics in this phase look like:

  • Torso stays upright and stacked over the pelvis during the drive down the mound.

  • Shoulders remain level, avoiding noticeable tilt toward or away from the hitter.

  • Energy moves efficiently forward, not side-to-side.

How to address it:

  • Drills: Stride-line drill or balance-point throws with mirror/video feedback.

  • Cues: “Stay tall and drive straight,” “Keep your chest over your belt buckle.”
